Statue of Liberty National Park: History
Statue of Liberty National Park: HistoryFrédéric-Auguste Bartholdi The sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, was born into a well-to-do family in Colmar, France on August 2, 1834. Bartholdi's father, a civil servant and prosperous landowner, died when the child was only two years old, so he was raised by his stern, possessive mother, Charlotte. Bartholdi began his career as a painter, but it was as a sculptor that he was to express his true spirit and gain his greatest fame. His first commission for a public monument came to him at the young age of 18. It was for a statue of one of Colmar's native sons, General Jean Rapp, a leader of Napoléon Bonaparte's army. Even at 18, Bartholdi loved bigness. The statue of the general was 12 feet tall and was removed from Bartholdi's studio, where the ceiling was only an inch higher. The statue established his reputation as a sculptor of note and led to many commissions for similar, oversized, patriotic works. A man of his time, Bartholdi wasn't alone in his passion for art on a grand scale. During the 19th century, large-scale public monuments were an especially popular art form.

Living statues come alive at market
Living statues come alive at marketSaturday, Sept. 25 marked the third year for Francesca Sobrer's "Living Statues" at the Bloomington Farmers Market. The Bloomington High School North drama teacher incorporates the European concept into her curriculum as a fundraiser for her theater program. "I lived in Spain and was taken by all of the statues in Europe," Sobrer said. "I decided that the concept of living statues would be perfect for my class." Last weekend, a group of 55 of Sobrer's advanced theater and production students stood in the market as entertainment. They stood as still as statues, yet they were able to stretch their performance talents as the afternoon went on. They will reprise their performances Saturday at the Bloomington Farmers' Market. "Each student must choose his or her own concept of the statue, set and costume," Sobrer said. "They come up with poses ,and they must hold these poses until someone comes up and puts money in their basket." The concepts range from The Beatles to "The Wizard of Oz" and each pose becomes more and more creative. "They are so creative. We have students posing as The Beatles and a group of girls posing as their fans," Sobrer said. The students prepared for the first five weeks of school through a number of acting exercises. The students stretched and worked on holding their bodies in certain positions for an extended period of time. They also practiced holding their facial expressions as well as communicating those expressions to the audience. "They enjoyed the challenges they faced. It became almost a meditation," Sobrer said. "The kids do a very clever job. I enjoy teaching it as much as they enjoy performing."
