The UNC Press, The Intelligence of Art by Thomas Crow
Google Page Rank - 4 The Intelligence of Art by Thomas Crow With this book, Thomas Crow contributes a refreshing analysis of the present state of art history, the practice of interpreting art and making it "intelligible." He aims to relocate the discussion of theory and method in art history away from models borrowed from other disciplines by presenting what he considers three of the most successful and challenging works in the literature of art history: Meyer Schapiro on the Romanesque portal sculpture of the abbey church of Sainte Marie in the French town of Souillac, Claude Lévi-Strauss on the Native American masks of the Northwest Coast, and Michael Baxandall on the limewood sculptors of Renaissance Germany.

Who is Giorgio Vasari?
Who is Giorgio Vasari?Giorgio Vasari was an Italian painter, architect, and biographer of the 16th century. He is best known for his extensive three-volume work on the lives of Italian artists, called Le Vite delle pi ù eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architettori ( Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects ), which includes biographical information and anecdotes on over 100 of his fellow artists. Le Vite is still considered a valuable reference resource today, though it is not entirely accurate and is best supplemented with more modern research. Giorgio Vasari was born on 30 July 1511 in Arezzo, Tuscany and apprenticed in his youth to stained glass painter Guglielmo da Marsiglia. Vasari studied art in Venice and Rome from the age of 16, meeting Michaelangelo and studying the works of Raphael and his contemporaries. Though not well remembered for his artistic contributions today, Vasari was highly admired and successful during his lifetime. A member of the Mannerist school, Vasari had patrons among the Medici family and worked in many of Italy's prominent cities, including Florence, Rome, Naples, and his home town of Arezzo. Some of his work can still be seen throughout Italy. Vasari built a home for himself in Arezzo in 1547 and decorated it with paintings. Today, it is open to the public as a museum in the artist's honor.

My sculpture is the art of expressing an individual spirit of ideas in its most palpable form. Each creation must have its own esthetic qualities that can be sustained throughout the work. Understanding of materials as Aliving gives me, the sculptor, a sense of continuity of nature and an awareness of the great variety of ways in which materials assert their character. Every material has an active presence, a character and a capacity for change that entitles it to be Aalive. To understand and be able to work with these Aliving materials and to occasionally counter or be able to transcend them, is the beauty of creating a work of sculpture. All materials are expressions of the forces of nature that I, the sculptor, try to incorporate in my artistic work. The utilization of these materials is a lifelong task, one that can never be completed because one can never master the temperament of all the materials the earth has to offer. As an artist I try to express the assertiveness of these materials utilizing form, movement and feeling. With heart, and joy and mind I continually search for the simple and spiritual elements found in the content of each individual creation.

Ubcpress.ca :: University of British Columbia PressAbout the Book Through the insightful perspective of one of America's preeminent art critics, this publication traces the development - with photographs and prose - of the work of one of the country's most original and inventive sculptors. Don Gummer first came to the attention of the New York art scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s with his painted-wood wall reliefs - formally layered geometric arrangements with strong architectural influence. He later moved from the wooden wall reliefs to metal "building" shapes of his own imagining. Soon the pieces became free-standing works of compelling strength and authority. Whether whimsically employing cardboard boxes as forms for his more recent treelike stainless steel and bronze sculptures or creating monumental "skyscraper" shapes, Gummer's unique style is characterized by a masterful attention to craftsmanship and detail. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1946, Gummer grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. The recipient of awards from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, Gummer is represented in a number of important public collections in the United States and abroad. In the year 2000 a monumental new work was dedicated at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. About the Author(s) Peter Plagens is a painter and art critic for Newsweek magazine. He lives in New York City.
