Pillar Procedure Improves Snoring By Firming Palate - Washington, DC
 Fifteen-Minute Procedure In Doctor’s Office Indicated For Moderate Sleep Apnea and Snoring When 51-year-old investment banker and father-of-four Bradford Harries asked his wife to rate his snoring on a scale of 1-10, she replied with an exasperated “15!†During a recent ski trip on which he was a chaperone, he was sent off to a room by himself to spare his fellow travelers from the noise of the nightly cacophony that everyone but him could hear. Snoring is the direct result of airflow moving through narrowed and/or floppy passages. Many parts of the airway can contribute to snoring, such as the nose, tongue and palate. The most common site contributing to snoring is the palate. In such cases a new 15- minute treatment called the Pillar Procedure might be the answer. Mr. Harries said, “After that experience I decided to undergo a sleep study, which I did at Georgetown University Hospit From that I learned that I would stop breathing more than 30 times a night, the longest of which was more than 30 seconds. That scared me. I was surprised to discover that I suffered from moderate sleep apnea since I didn’t feel tired during the day and I didn’t have difficulty waking up in the morning.†“This is the main way patients come to us. Frustrated and worried husbands and wives send their spouses because they keep them awake all night, or they become concerned about the periods when they simply don’t breathe,†said Sonya Malekzadeh, MD Otolarnygologist and ENT surgeon at GUH. “The first step is a complete office examination to determine why the snoring is happening.
