Consider the Lobster - Book Reviews - Books - Entertainment - theage.com.au
Consider the Lobster - Book Reviews - Books - Entertainment - theage.com.auHalf the reason that strange combination of suburban realism and far-out Joycean techniques looks like a significant movement - embracing everything from Jeffrey Eugenides' The Virgin Suicides to Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - is that Foster Wallace's 1996 novel Infinite Jest is the kind of masterpiece, like Ulysses , that is significant in itself and gives significance, and endows with family resemblance a lot of other things in the vicinity. Infinite Jest is a book that harrows the mind and cheers it with hilarities, and its style is as fresh and new-minted (despite the shadows of Joyce and Sterne and Pynchon) as its vision represents a masterful and wise take on our world. A few years later, Foster Wallace wrote Brief Interviews with Hideous Men , in which a chorus of chaps spoke dramatically and musically about the atrocities inflicted and suffered in the course of their lives and included a thing or two that would bear comparison with the best of Dubliners or Chekhov. Foster Wallace does seem that good. He's in his early 40s but he looks like the bigger kind of writer, even though in the past few years we have only had Everything and More , about mathematics, and Oblivion , another book of stories. And so to this new book, of essays no less. They are the more welcome, given the comparative lack of recent work by their author, even if the idea of an essay by Foster Wallace seems perilously close to a contradiction in terms. If the essay is the form in which a writer takes his mind for a ride or delivers its judgements in brief, and with a strict maintenance of mood and with concomitant economy, then he is the essay writer from hell. There are only 10 essays in Consider the Lobster . Two of them are book reviews (one of John Updike's Toward the End of Time and the other of Joseph Frank's multi-volume life of Dostoevsky).
