Cupolas have also been an integral part of barn design, as installing cupolas allowed a continuous flow of air, which then dried the hay stored high in the barn.

Mary Ellen Slayter - From Barns to Churches, Cupolas Add Interest to the Skyline - washingtonpost.com
From Barns to Churches, Cupolas Add Interest to the Skyline By Mary Ellen Slayter Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, August 19, 2007; F06 Looking for a way to elevate the design of your house? One time-honored way is to top it with a cupola. A cupola is generally defined as a dome-shaped ornamental structure that sits on top of a larger building. If it can be reached by a stairway inside, it's sometimes called a belvedere or a widow's walk. Some cupolas, called lanterns, have small windows that illuminate the areas below, sort of like vertical skylights. Cupolas are found on a wide range of buildings, from simple barns to the grandest of churches. They're frequently topped with weather vanes and finials. Like many architectural features, cupolas meet aesthetic and functional needs. "A cupola serves two purposes -- ventilation and light," said Reena Racki, an architect in the District who has worked with cupolas in several of her projects. In one recent project, a new house in Pennsylvania , Racki incorporated several eight-foot-tall cupolas made by Amish craftsmen in the late 19th century. The owner "loved the rural landscape" and wanted the new building to "look like it belonged." The cupolas were originally part of a barn on the site.

Cupola shown is a #4 CCS-G with options: double base, rigged for a hanging lantern (not installed at time of photo), internal weathervane support, and a custom "Scottie" weathervane. * Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio for every inch a roof drops over every inch it extends horizontally. For example, with a pitch of 8-12 (or 8/12), this roof drops 8" for every 12" it extends hoizontally. It is important to note your roof pitch when ordering. If your roof pitch exceeds the listed " Maximum Pitch " then a double base will need to be added to the cupola. If you have trouble determining this measurement, ask any competent roofer, builder, or architect.
