The Sistine Chapel Ceiling | Michelangelo | Sistine Chapel Ceiling | RenArt Studio | Back to the Sistine Chapel My name is Jacopo l'Indaco and I was an assistant to Michelangelo when he painted the Sistine ceiling. I remember the day he arrived here in Rome to appear before Pope Julius II. Michelangelo, only 33 at the time, thought the Pope was summoning him to tell him to continue with the statue for Julius's tomb. He fancied himself a sculptor above all else and was really disappointed when the funding ran out for the project and church abandoned the sculpture. Michelangelo spent a year on the gigantic bronze, which was melted for cannon shortly after its completion. But the Pope didn't want to talk about that project - he had a new one in mind for Michelangelo - a huge fresco painting for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Then the arguments started. Michelangelo didn't want the project because he knew it was an impossible task and one that would require him to forgo his true love, sculpting. Eventually, the pope wore him down and he gave in. But you have to realize that this was a huge undertaking.
