Rick Steves' Europe: Rome's Catacombs
Rick Steves' Europe: Rome's CatacombsHome > Plan Your Trip > Best Destinations > Italy Rome's Catacombs Eighteen-hundred years ago, no one was allowed to be buried within the walls of Rome. While pagan Romans were into cremation, Christians preferred to be buried. But land was expensive and most Christians were poor. A few wealthy landowning Christians allowed their land to be used as burial places. These became the Catacombs. The 40 or so known catacombs circle Rome about three miles from the center. From the first through the fifth centuries, Christians dug an estimated 360 miles of tomb-lined tunnels with networks of galleries as much as five layers deep. The Christians burrowed many layers deep for two reasons: to get more mileage out of the donated land and to be near martyrs and saints already buried there. The volcanic rock called tufa — soft and easy to cut but becoming very hard when exposed to air — was perfect for the job. Bodies were wrapped in linen (like Christ was).

Convento de San Fransisco The original catacombs are a network of underground burial galleries beneath San Sebastiano fuori le mura , in Rome . The derivation of the word itself is disputed and it remains unclear if it ultimately derives from the cemetery itself or from the locality in which it is found. There is no doubt however that the San Sebastiano catacombs are the first to be referred to as such. The word now refers to any network of caves , grottos, or subterranean place that is used for the burial of the dead , or it can refer to a specific underground burial place. Famous examples include:

kom el shokafa catacombs- Alexandria, Egypt - VirtualTourist.comThe Narrow And Steep Stairs of The Main Catacomb by pangtidor , 1 more photos Send Photo to a Friend It is located in Kom-El-Shogafa, believed was established in 200AD. It will be located on the last end of your left from the entance gate. It looks like an underground graveyard. The catacomb was found accidently by `a digging donkey`. You have to go down through narrow and steep stairs almost a hundred steps. You can see the hole where they brought down the bodies to the underground right into the mummification case, located in the middle. From the mummification area, there will be some coridors lead you to hundreds of `corpse lockers`. After the mummification, the body will be placed in `a locker` along with its sarchopagus. When it was found, no mummies have been found. They speculated that they were destroyed by the underground water and humidity.
